The 2008 Joe Hachem & Shane Warne Charity Poker Tournament
What a fantastic night we had on Monday at our second Joe Hachem & Shane Warne Charity Poker Tournament held at Crown Casino. Over 140 players battled it out to finish in the last 6, qualifying them to play in the final with Joe Hachem & Shane Warne.
The night saw a star studded line up of personalities from the music, media and sporting arena's trying to bluff each other. With a 'Bounty' on each of their heads for being the first two knocked out, the rivalry was fierce, finally seeing Dermott Brereton and Dave Hughes succumb to the pressure of 'The Bounty'.
Another king of poker was crowned when Michael Chrisanthopoulos won the tournament! Congratulations Michael.
Hailing from 'Hachem territory' in Melbourne's northern suburbs, the 27-year-old brought a massive chip stack to the Final Table. Michael has been playing for 3 years, and came third in the 2008 Aussie Millions 'Main Event' in January.
Other celebrities to show some real poker skills were Brendan Fevola, Brian McFadden, Brodie Holland, Danny Frawley, Brodie Harper, Dipper, Glen Moriarty, Grant Smillie, Joe Hachem, Jon Stevens, Kevin Muscat, Lauren Phillips, Simon Marshall, FiFi Box, Luke Hodge, Jeff Fenech, Gary Ablett Jnr, Shane Warne, Trevor Marmalade and Marc Murphy, all getting down to the final 30 players.
Not only were the celebrities playing poker, Billy Brownless, Lleyton Hewitt and Glenn Robbins also came to show their support.
A live auction on the night generated some great bidding and saw a package to the 2009 Ashes series go for $25,000! With the entire night raising close to $200,000. The night was so spectacular that over 200 guests have already pledged to take seats in next year's event so they don't miss out! Next year our goal is to have 500 runners and the night will be held on the 1st November 2009 in the Las Vegas Room at Crown.
If you would like to reserve your seat now, you can do so by contacting the foundation and we will make sure you don't miss out!
All proceeds go directly towards charities who work 'hands on' with seriously ill and underprivileged children of Australia, now and in the future.
"It's a great cause and The Shane Warne Foundation helps a lot of people. From a personal standpoint, it fills a gap that I've been looking for to give something back" said 2005 World Series of Poker Champion and The Shane Warne Foundation ambassador Joe Hachem.
Joe Hachem and Shane Warne have both succeeded at the highest level of their chosen fields and for the second time, the cricket great and world poker champion combined their talents, to impact the lives of children who need it most.
A special thank you must also be made to the following companies and individuals who kindly sponsored the event, who donated items for our Live Auction or who gave their time to support our Poker Night: Wild Turkey, VB, SEEK, 888 Poker, Poker Stars, Etihad Airways, Volkswagon UK, Courthouse Kempinski Hotel, Andrew McManus Presents, JMS Diamonds, Azzaro, Kate Radford Make-up Artist, Alannah Hill, Crown, Creatology, CJP Designs, Tony Hachem, GEON, Shaniera Thompson, Avenue Plastic Surgery and Lifestyle Portraits.

Modern Masters Dinner 2008
The Modern Masters dinner was once again staged at Glass brasserie, Hilton in Sydney. The evening saw 100 guests treated to the fine dining exploits of celebrity chef Luke Mangan.
The night was hosted by Brendon Julian who did a fantastic job! A great line up of entertainment performed on the night, kicking off with UK vocalist - Amy Pearson who performed two of her favourite tracks from her album 'Who I am'.
The panel saw the fabulous duo of Glenn McGrath and Shane Warne openly chat about life after cricket, family, poker, the IPL whilst finishing off with some behind the scene tales of The Australian Cricket Team.
Most of the comedy on the night was left to Australia's number 1 comedian, Vince Sorrenti, who performed one of the most entertaining 20 minute routines! Vince touched on cricket, India, politics, sport, leaving the guests in tears of laughter.
Paul O'Sullivan from Lemon Baxter was our entertaining auctioneer, creating much hype and anticipation in the room. The bidding was fierce and the generosity of our guests was amazing.
BGC, once again came on board as the major sponsor for the evening with Deane Gunson accepting a signature frame from Shane Warne as a token of The Foundations appreciation. Greg Harris from Fosters / VB donated all beverages for the evening continuing on their great support of the foundation.
A few great supporters of The Shane Warne Foundation attended the night and must be thanked for all their help: Harry & Sandee Hodge from Quiksilver, Danny Wallis from DWS & Gavin Varejes from Richmark Holdings.
Special guests included Jon and Tim Fariss from INXS, John Eales and Don Spencer.
A final thank you to Luke Mangan and his team at Glass brasserie for making the night so enjoyable.
Annual Golf Day 2008
The Annual Shane Warne Foundation Golf Day was held on Monday 4 February at The Heritage Golf & Country Club - Chirnside Park. The weather was once again kind to us and saw 19 groups compete for the coveted trophy. With the course in absolutely fantastic condition, no wind and plenty of scoring opportunities we were set for some very low scores.
Garry Lyon handed out the pre-game address, pin pointing some very ordinary fashions worn by James Brayshaw & Simon Marshall before sounding the siren and wishing everyone the best of luck.
The Foundation's most recently appointed Australian Ambassador - Joe Hachem arrived very early to hit the practice fairway and putting green but a post mortem on the day showed he should have been conserving his energy in the clubhouse.
Two young pro's joined in on the day tempting players to out-drive them or get closer to the pin, so many thanks to Rob Hodgetts & Shane Baxter.
Greg Harris and the team from VB expanded on their summer of Warnie by decking out the signature 11th hole with VB Lazyboy Recliners, BBQ, Promotional Hosts and of course Shane. This hole soon became a hive of activity, with every group challenging SKW to get inside their ball. Shane was in good form and claimed victory at a very healthy percentage, apart from the few that found the water!
As the day progressed, we saw four groups emerge as potential winners. ONE 68, Challenge, Strapp Ford and Deacons were all extremely close through the final two holes. Eventually the team from Challenge claimed victory by the narrowest of margins from ONE 68. A very relaxed cocktail reception / BBQ and a few beers saw the day come to an end back at the Clubhouse, with trophy presentations, highlights of the day, an auction and raffle.
Scott Cope and the team from Titleist once again sponsored the day, providing balls, caps, shoes, drivers and a full set of clubs to the winning group. A fantastic contribution and as always greatly appreciated.
Overall the day once again proved to be a great success with many highlights and entertaining moments throughout.
Our thanks to VB & Titleist for directly sponsoring the day and to The Heritage Golf Course for providing such a wonderful venue.

Boxing Day Breakfast 2007
This year The Shane Warne Foundation Boxing Day Breakfast was held at the Palladium Ballroom, Crown.
Guests who purchased VIP tickets were treated to a ‘Mingle with Shane Warne’ prior to the breakfast commencing, which was a great way to start the day off.
Eddie McGuire donated his time to host the proceedings and did an amazing job. The breakfast started with Eddie interviewing Anil Kumble, Michael Clarke and Andrew Symonds riveting our audience with stories about their cricketing career and their thoughts on the day ahead. He then wished the boys well for the Boxing Day Test and invited the ‘Music Men’ to the stage to perform one of their hilarious acts!
Terry Jenner headed our Cricket panel, consisting of Ian Chappell, Ian Healy, Ravi Shastri & Michael Slater. The questions and answers from the panel, gave our guests an opportunity to see what these ex-cricketing greats ‘really thought’ about the game we all love. Our feedback has been phenomenal and guests thoroughly enjoyed hearing all the “off the record” conversations had by these guys.
Eddie invited funny man Vince Sorrenti to the stage to perform one of his acts, which had the guests in fits of laughter!
Shane then took the stage to talk about the most important part of the morning; the reason we were all there: to raise funds to enrich the lives of seriously ill and underprivileged children in Australia for now and in the future. Shane announced a total give on the morning of just over $700,000 to our 2008 beneficiaries.
To learn more about our 2008 beneficiaries Click here
Our beneficiary guest speaker for the breakfast was Scott Taylor from the Heartwell Foundation. Their vision is that Australian children, living with illness, disability, or disadvantage can access rehabilitation and movement education programs that will unlock their physical potential, fully enriching them and the communities in which they live and so challenge them to climb mountains they never dreamed of climbing. He spoke about how much the donation they received from TSWF has helped change children’s lives and will continue to do so.
Not only was Eddie our MC, he was also our Auctioneer!!
The items that were up for grabs at our Live auction were: ‘The Footy Show Experience’ with Garry Lyon and the crew, Shane Warne ‘350 signed Test-Shirt, Sir Donald Bradman signed Cricket Bat, Dinner with Joe Hachem & Shane Warne followed by Poker, Rolling Stones signed guitar, VB Box Box, Big Bat & Warnie Doll, Xbox 360 with Shane’s face airbrushed on the side & signed, Diamond Cross Necklace & earrings, Half an hour session with Shane in the MCG Cricket nets. Shane was going head to head with another bidder for the Xbox however he unfortunately lost that one!
Once again, an amazing morning was had by all before most guests retreated to a day at the cricket!
A special thank you to all our guest speakers and performers, Eddie McGuire, Anil Kumble, Michael Clarke, Andrew Symonds, Terry Jenner, Ian Chappell, Ian Healy, Ravi Shastri, Michael Slater & Vince Sorrenti. Many thanks to Greg Harris and the team at Fosters for providing all the beverages on the morning and all other sponsors who support The Shane Warne Foundation.
Inaugural Joe Hachem/Shane Warne Charity Poker Night
On 30th November we held our inaugural Joe Hachem/Shane Warne Foundation Charity Poker Night in the Poker Room at Crown.
TV, sporting and entertainment identities went all in with serious poker players in the quest for the $25,000 and watch to the value of $11,000 donated by Raymond Weil as first prize! Chancing their hand were Fifi Box, Chris Judd, Brigitte McIntyre, Brendan Fevola, Suzie Wilks, Dave Hughes, Livinia Nixon, Nathan Buckley, Aaron Hamill, Kelly Landry, Ann-Maree Cooksley, Simon Marshall and Glenn Robbins. Many other media identities just turned up to watch on.
Danny Wallis from DWS blew us all away with his amazing generosity on the night, not only buying auction items, re-buys and chipping in for 15 of his mates to play, the icing on the cake was his pledge to give .50c for every $1.00 we raised, which is phenomenal. Everyone at TSWF is completely floored by this offer and his direct input will make a huge difference to the lives of children who are less fortunate. Words are not enough to thank him for this absolutely astounding philanthropy.
A fantastic night was had by all with well over $200k raised for the Shane Warne Foundation, which is a brilliant result and will go a very long way to enriching the lives of seriously ill and underprivileged children in Australia. TSWF is hoping to make an announcement at our Boxing Day Breakfast of a $1million give to Charities that work “hands on” with children that fit this mould.
Over one hundred players battled it out to finish in the last 6, qualifying them to play in the final with Shane Warne and Joe Hachem.
The Qualifiers were:
Dennis Huntly who went deep into the Aussie Millions 2007
Billy Sukkar he won his way to the WSOP in one of our $340 satellites, and, is also Joe Hachem’s Cousin
Sarah Bilney “Aussie” Sarah is probably our best credentialed female player
Daniel Sequenzia Came 2nd in Melbourne Champs
Jim Lee Local press photographer
Julius Colman Came 4th in Aussie Millions 2007, highest place Australian and donated his winnings to charity. He promised to donate his winnings in this tournament to the Shane Warne Foundation as well
Ok the Action
First out - 2005 WSOP Champion Joe Hachem, when his Pocket Jacks were no match for the Pocket Aces of Shane Warne!
Jim Lee was next to go followed by, Sarah Bilney, Dennis Huntly and Daniel Sequenzia.
Julius, Billy and Shane battled it out for a while until Julius moved all in and Shane made the call from the big blind with his “favourite hand- J10”. His favourite hand was actually in front as Julius only had 23 of clubs . A jack on the flop was enough to take it down for Warney.
Heads up play was brief, on a Ten high flop Billy Sukkar moved all in and was called by Shane. Billy had J10 and Shane had Ace Ten, looking in good shape. The turn was not good this time for the Master Spinner, a Jack. Shane could only win with an ace on the river…..but it was not to be. Billy claimed the pot and the $25K first prize, although he seemed more excited about the Trophy than any thing else.
Official results.
1st Billy Sukkar $25k and $11k Raymond Weil watch
2nd Shane Warne
3rd Julius Colman *(donated $5k back to the Foundation - thank you Julius)
4th Daniel Sequenzia
5th Dennis Huntly
6th Sarah Bilney
7th Jim Lee
8th Joe Hachem
‘Family Fun Day’
On the 21st March TSWF held our inaugural 'Family Day' at Junction Oval to give Shane and our board members the chance to mingle with some of the children whose lives we contribute to from Variety, Heartwell, Red Dust, Alannah & Madeline, Challenge, Life Flight and Kids Under Cover.
Everyone had a fantastic day and most importantly the children had a chance to forget whatever they are going through and enjoy some "time out".
The children had a chance to meet their sporting hero's and celebrities including Shane Warne, Dannii Minogue, Aaron Hamill, Leigh Montagna, Brendan Goddard, Nick Riewoldt, Rob Sitch and Trevor Marmalade. Thank you to all our celebrities who so generously gave up their time to come and bring some joy to the lives of these very special children.
Everyone enjoyed a BBQ lunch with lots of lollies and surprises…..Some of the activities that kept the kids busy were:
bouncing on the jumping castle
showing their artistic side with a painting activity
face painting
Demonstrating their true cricket talents in the cricket nets
Showing up the AFL footballers in the handball competition
Being involved in the roving magician's 'magic'.
TSWF also took this opportunity to hand over the keys to the first of 12 specially fitted buses to Variety - The Children's Charity. These buses have been purchased through the funding of $180,000 Variety has received from TSWF. These buses are being used to transport the children of Variety around in every state in Australia, which is a wonderful result.
The event was a huge success and from all accounts- fun was had by all with each and every child leaving with a smile on their face - mission accomplished!
Mention must be made to our Volunteers on the day. Your help and support is invaluable to TSWF. A very special thank you goes to Clinton Plowman who has come on board to support TSWF. You always manage to capture the excitement and positive feel at our events! We are most thankful for your time and efforts, they are truly appreciated!
TSWF & Gillette Fusion Celebrity Twenty/20 Cricket Match
The Shane Warne Foundation and Gillette Fusion teamed up to provide a day full of fun and laughter whilst at the same time raising funds for the seriously ill and underprivileged children of Australia.
Sunday the 18th February saw the Shane Warne XI and the Pat Rafter XI go head-to-head in a nail biting cricket match. Each team was made up of celebrities including our very own Garry Lyon, Straughnie, Glenn Robbins, Dave Hughes, James Brayshaw, Melanie Jones, Shane Crawford, Michael Slater, David Boon, Ian Healy, Mark Taylor and many more!
Entry to the game was by gold coin donation with all of the proceeds going to The Shane Warne Foundation. Through the gold coin donation alone we raised $21,165.00, which was absolutely fantastic.
Channel 9 televised the event and viewers also had the opportunity to bid on-line on some "money can't buy experiences" as well as one-off memorabilia pieces, all donated by our very own Chairman, Shane Warne. Items included:
- A Session with the Master - coaching instructions from Shane Warne himself, then put it into practice with him bowling in the nets.
- Shane's gold 'Zooter Shoes'
- Shane Warne Portrait which hangs in the Long Room at Lords, signed by both Shane and the Artist.
- 'The End of an Era' Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath and Damien Martyn's last test match together at The SCG.
- The 500th Club ball - Signed by the first four bowlers to reach 500 test wickets.
The on-line Auction reached an amazing $72,200 which will also go towards helping to enrich the lives of seriously ill and underprivileged children and teenagers within Australia.
The day was a huge success with hilarious commentary and strictly "un"-professional umpiring by Billy Brownless and Russell Gilbert. Celebrities who had never played cricket before had the chance to "pad up" against some of the worlds best…which made a very entertaining day for all!
The Shane Warne Foundation would like to thank Gillette Fusion for their wonderful support on the day and donating $150,000 to go towards this very worthy cause. A special mention must be made to all our volunteers on the day and to everyone who attended and donated their gold coin, you truly made a big difference.

Boxing Day Breakfast
TSWF Boxing Day Breakfast was held for the first time at The Palladium at Crown, with over 900 guests in attendance. The script written for Shane to go into the test on his home soil sitting on 699 Test wickets led to a most eagerly anticipated day.
Garry Lyon hosted proceedings and started the morning off with a poem dedicated to Shane by renowned author Chris Driscoll, needless to say there was not a dry eye in the crowd.
Shane Warne spoke to the guests first before inviting a couple of his close friends, Glenn McGrath and Kevin Pietersen up on stage for a chat. The three entertained the crowd with some great banter before having to head off to the MCG for battle.
Terry Jenner was our MC for the panel, consisting of Mark Taylor, Nasser Hussain, Ian Chappell and David Lloyd. The panel provided guests with a terrific insight into world class cricket, the highs and lows and jubilation that is the game we all love.
Brett Rankin (CEO Powercor Children's Helicopter) was a special guest speaker on the morning, providing guests with an insight into what TSWF means to charities that work hands on with seriously ill and underprivileged Australian kids. Brett spoke of how TSWF donated $100,000 to Lifeflight which assisted keeping the operation in the air until Government funding was approved, ultimately saving the lives of 22 infants throughout Victoria.
Paul O'Sullivan from Lemon Baxter geared up to conduct the live auction and with Garry Lyon and Billy Brownless by his side the entertainment flowed for quite some time. There was a U2 Guitar, Fly fishing with Rob Sitch and Tom Gleisner, Raymond Weil Watch, Makers Mark Jewelery, Phillip Howe oil painting of SK Warne and a Day in the Box with Kevin Sheedy up for grabs but the highlight of the auction was a game of backyard cricket at Warney's place for you and five mates. The bidding was furious and within minutes had reached $30,000 at the fall of the hammer.
As the morning was coming to an end, Paul Kelly appeared on stage to give the guests one last memory of this very special day. Paul played "Behind the bowlers arm" and "Leaps and Bounds", sending the 900 guests to the MCG on the ultimate high, topped off by seeing S. K. Warne take his 700th Test Wicket at The MCG.
The Boxing Day Breakfast raised just over $300,000 to assist seriously ill and underprivileged Australian kids.
A special thank you to all our guest speakers, Paul Kelly, Chris Driscoll, Paul O'Sullivan, Billy Brownless and Garry Lyon for taking time out to MC the event. Many thanks to Greg Harris and the team at Fosters for providing all the beverages on the morning and all other sponsors who support The Shane Warne Foundation.
Annual Golf Day

The day started with a putting competition that was won by Allco’s Justin Lewis. The over all day was won by the One 68 company that carted an incredible team score of 141 stableford points.
A big thank you goes to our wonderful Golf Day supporters, Titleist, The Fosters Group and Emirates. Thank you also to Peter O’Malley who flew down especially for the day to help out the foundation and of course to the Woodlands Golf Club who had the course in magnificent condition.
